Brown Brothers Media was started in 2020 by three brothers from Melbourne. Brendan had founded Expert Editor, one of Australia’s leading editing practices, and built e-commerce businesses. Lachlan had built Hack Spirit into one of the most-read personal development sites on the web. Justin had co-founded Ideapod, a platform for ideas. Each had built something independently; combining their publications and experience under one company made sense for sharing resources, editorial standards, and infrastructure.
From Singapore, the company grew by acquiring established publications and investing in them. That investment is editorial before it is anything else — modernising each title’s focus, expanding its readership, and growing the team behind it. Where a publication’s editors and direction are working, we keep them in place; more often, we add to them, bringing in editors, writers, and producers so that a masthead that once ran on one person’s energy has a full team behind it.
Today the house spans titles founded as far back as 1995, alongside magazines we built ourselves — publications across science, technology, food, space, parenting, and the mind, read by millions of people every month. The team includes more than 25 editors, writers, designers, developers, and operators working across three continents.
Mission
Too much useful information is buried, overcomplicated, or dressed up in language that keeps regular people out. Health advice hidden behind clinical jargon. Human behavior insights wrapped in academic abstractions. Business knowledge gatekept by consultants charging thousands to explain what could be said plainly.
We think that’s backwards. Our publications exist to give people straight, honest information they can actually use. Not oversimplified. Not patronizing. Just clear. A 45-year-old in regional Australia trying to understand why her teenager won’t talk to her shouldn’t need a specialist background to find something useful. Someone switching to plant-based eating shouldn’t have to sift through influencer marketing to get actual nutrition information.
That’s the thread across everything we publish. We speak to people as they are. We cite our sources so readers can check for themselves. We don’t hide behind vague authority or dress up thin ideas with fancy language. Every article is reviewed by a human editor before it goes live. When we get something wrong, we correct it publicly and move on.
The people
The publications are run by named editors and staffed by a team working from Singapore, Europe, South America, and the Philippines. Meet the full team, or read how we publish for the standards every title works to.
The portfolio
The house operates a portfolio of specialist publications — some founded by us, most acquired and invested in. Full profiles of the notable titles are on the publications page.
